The Bahamas is an archipelago of 700 islands and cays with population 371,960. Although Andros is the largest island of the Bahamas, sixty percent of the population resides on the Capital island of New Providence. The Bahamas is located less than 50 miles off the coast of Florida.
The Bahamas gained its Independence on July 10, 1973, but is still considered a part of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Queen is still the head of state and is represented by the Governor General. The first prime minister of the Bahamas was Sir Lyden Oscar Pindling who governed for 25 years.
The number one industry of the Bahamas is Tourism, followed by Banking and Finance. Christianity is the major religion of the Bahamas with Baptist being the leading denomination.
